First MacBook Air Benchmarks
The Computers:
• The MacBook Air has a 1.6 GHz custom Intel processor, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 RAM, and an 80 GB, 1.8", 4200 RPM HDD.
• The MacBook (a generation old) has a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 RAM, and a 120 GB, 2.5", 5400 HDD.
• The MacBook Pro (also a generation old) has a 2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 RAM, and a custom 160 GB, 2.5", 5400 RPM, Seagate Momentus HDD.
The Tests:
• For the MP3 Encoding, we used iTunes and Seu Jorge's album Cru, which is 46 minutes long. We set up custom import settings, which were 192 kbps VBR, set at high quality.
• The Video Conversion test was done using a trailer for 300 that was 1:46 in length and 73 MB (.mov). We converted using the export option in Quicktime 7.4 that used the iPhone export preset.
• The Thumbdrive to MacBook file transfer test was done using an 803 MB .zip file and a 2GB Lexar Lightning Thumbdrive (30 MB/s read, 21 MB/s write).
• The File Duplication test was done on the Lexar thumbdrive using the same zip file used in the previous test.

If Apple Designed a Flashlight...

the world has fallen in love with Apple's clean and sophisticated designs, but is making an Apple flashlight going too far? You bet it is. Still, designer Myoshimasato has developed a concept piece that attempts to illustrate what an iLight would look like if it actually existed. I'll admit, it does look like something Apple would design (or Nintendo for that matter), but the functionality makes what should be a simple device unnecessarily complex, and there is no real software component to speak of. Two qualities not generally associated with Apple products.
For starters, the light is touch sensitive. You can turn the light on and off with a single tap, or increase the brightness by flicking your finger forward. Double-tapping locks the device and the glowing Apple logo indicates battery status. You can even tap on the logo to automatically flash "Help" in Morse code. While that last part is definitely interesting, it may not be all that handy unless you are lost at sea or your neighbor has been stationed on a battleship or something. Would a product like this be useful or useless? Discuss.

Apple iTablet

Apple introduced its multi-touch iPhone nearly one year ago. Not long after, the long-awaited iPod Touch debuted in roughly the same form factor, sans the cellular phone and camera. Many who have enjoyed the new technology have wondered how else Apple will utilize touch computing.
Rumors of an Apple tablet have circulated since the Newton's demise. But the information LOOPRumors is gathering points to an entirely new device that will coexist with Apple's current laptop offerings, and benefit from Multi-Touch 2.0. The iTablet, as we will refer to it, will be much more of a Mac Communicator than today's iPhone or iPod Touch.
